Thursday

I have been thinking of everyone during this difficult time.  I really miss seeing all of your smiling faces!  School has not been the same without you.

I have made a list below of some learning activities you can do at home.  The CBE will be providing further updates after the Spring Break.

Here is a CBE link to learning at home:

K- 6 Parent Supports

Here are some other ideas for reading, writing and math:

Reading

Reading Strategies

Review the eight different reading strategies that we have learned in class.  Practice using them while reading books.

Here is a chart for your reference:

Treasure Books

Students brought home their treasure books last week.  Your child can practice reading the poems.

Sight Word Practice

Students can continue to practice sight words.  The lists of words and ideas on how to practice them are at the front of the treasure book.

Raz-Kids

Students can read and listen to stories on Raz-Kids.  I have updated your child's reading level.

Writing

Your child can write in a journal and share what he or she has written with an adult.  We have been focusing on how to sound out words by listening for beginning, middle and ending sounds.  We have also been editing our work for capital letters and periods.

Math

We have been learning addition and subtraction up to the number 20.  Students can practice solving questions using the different strategies taught in class.
For example:  14 + 2 = _____         16 - _____ = 12

I miss everyone very much!  I hope that you have a restful Spring Break.

basic achievement             40 - 54 words
good achievement             55 - 74 words
excellent achievement          75 words or more

Please note that your child should know how to say the words quickly.  Sight words are not meant to be sounded out.  Flashcards work well for practice.  Please see the cover letter in your child's treasure book for other ideas on how to practice the words.  The three lists of words can also be found in the treasure book.

Dear Parents:

Freddy the Frog and Betty the Bunny are our class friends who like to travel.  They are excited to explore our neighbourhood of New Brighton and the city of Calgary.  Please take pictures of your child and Freddy the Frog or Betty the Bunny at different locations.  You can print the pictures out or email them to Ms. Lang at kelang@cbe.ab.ca.

Each student will visit with Freddy the Frog or Betty the Bunny for one week.  Please feel free to wash them as necessary.

A journal has been included in each bag to illustrate and write about their visits.  Please ask your child to complete at least three journal entries about his or her experiences to share with the class.  Please encourage your child to sound out words independently and to practice what he or she has written.  It is not necessary to correct his or her spelling.

Have fun with Freddy the Frog or Betty the Bunny as they help the class learn more about our community and the city of Calgary!

Sincerely,

Ms. Lang

Please see your child's green I Can folder sent home today.  The folder contains a writing sample and a math sample.  The writing sample is about human adaptations to winter.  The math sample is an addition and subtraction test.  If you have any questions about your child's progress please feel free to contact me.  Please return the folder to school tomorrow.
